Abstract
In this paper we discuss the application of integrated ad-hoc and cellular networking. An approach is proposed using ad-hoc relaying to improve dead sport coverage in the cellular networks. The message interaction procedure for relay station (RS) selection is provided. Three RS selection algorithms, minimum distance algorithm (MDA), minimum velocity algorithm (MVA) and integrated distance and velocity algorithm (IDVA), are proposed from different viewpoints. Finally using MATLAB the efficiency of ad-hoc relaying approach is analyzed and the performance of three RS selection algorithms is compared. Simulation results have shown that the ad-hoc relaying can effectively reduce dropping probability caused by dead spots. In terms of the performance improvement, MDA and MVA have lower dropping probability but more handoff occurrences while IDVA has the fewest handoff occurrences with almost the same dropping probability.
