Subject competition has an important significance in many aspects, ranging from constructing discipline, course and laboratory of university, guiding universities´ paying attention to educating students´ the abilities of innovation, cooperation, integrating theory with practice, hands-on and engineering, sponsoring the competence-oriented education in an all-round way, and enhancing students´ ability of design and fabrication. The paper presents some methods on enhancing the students´ abilities of participating in mechanical design competition, constructing subject competition echelon, effectively organizing subject competition activities and strengthening out the relationship between guiding competitions and guiding the practice activities. Practice has shown that the methods we presented were effective and had some promoting effects on subject competition and enhancement of students´ hands-on ability.
