Gannan Pasturing Area is a typically ecological fragile area, to improve the livelihood capital of herdsman in Gannan pasturing area has become the base and the key to deal with poverty eradication, environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources. Guided by the method of participatory rural appraisal (PRA), this paper made 97 herders´ families in Gannan pasturing area engaged in the investigation which were divided into pure pasturing area households, and mixed pasturing-farming area households according to their different livelihoods. Comparison and analysis were made in terms of the herders´ livelihood capital. We put forward certain relevant policy suggestions on the base of analytic results. The results are as follows: (1) the livelihood capital of herders in pure pasturing areas are larger than those of herders in mixed pasturing-farming areas; (2) herders in pure pasturing areas are short of financial capital while herders in mixed pasturing-farming areas are lack of physical capital.
