This study is supported by the agriculture geochemical survey project in Dakang town, Jiangyou city. This paper studies the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in soil and then evaluates heavy metal potentialities in purple soil and paddy soil by adopting the potential ecological risk index(PERI) proposed by Hakanson. In purple soil, the data show that Hg, Cd, and Cu are the top three heavy metals obviously influenced by human activities and Hg, being identified as the priority pollution, presents a moderate potential risk to the environment. Unlike purple soil, the data collected from the paddy soil show that As, Hg and Cd are the top three heavy metal elements obviously influenced by human activities and all present a moderate potential risk to the environment. However, in the entire study area, the heavy metals present a low potential ecological risk.
