  • Abstract
    High-speed optical modulators with a hybrid integration of silica-based planar lightwave circuits and LiNbO3 phase shifters are reviewed. Combining the advantages of the two components, the hybrid modulators offer high functionality and low optical losses with large electro-optic bandwidth. Using this technique, we have demonstrated a 40 Gb/s return-to-zero-(RZ-) DQPSK modulator, a 100 Gb/s polarization-division multiplexing-(PDM-) QPSK modulator, and a 64 QAM modulator.
