2 algae - Skeletonema costatum (SC) and Prorocgntrum micans (PM) were investigated for the influence on the reproduction of Calanus sinicus. Fatty acids produced by phytoplankton were detected with GC-MS analysis method. The results showed that, compared with PM, SC induced inhibitory effects on egg production of Calanus sinicus. By the analysis of fatty acids, the values of total content of fatty acids were decreased in decline phase, comparing with in logarithmic phase. Both in two phases, Prorocgntrum micans could sustain higher total content total content of fatty acids and egg production rate than Skeletonema costatum. Evidence indicated that both food type and culturing time have significant impact on the composition of the fatty acids, and induced potential effect on the reproduction of Calanus sinicus.
