Descaling nozzles used for generation of high-speed water jets are key components in high-pressure waterjet descaling system. The jet quality and the jet impact performance of the nozzle have great effect upon hot-rolling steel billet descaling. According to work conditions of waterjet descaling process, a jet impact performance test system for nozzles was developed. The jet impact force distribution and the jet impact field profile accounting for the jet impact performance were automatically measured with PLC-based control system. The relation of the jet impact force to standoff distance was also investigated so as to evaluate the jet quality. All test outcomes were graphically displayed in various ways with the post-processing program, which were then downloaded to a computer. A fan-type nozzle used for scale removal was tested. Results obtained were presented and discussed.
