Abstract
This paper describes a method to analyze and design PM motors with non-overlapping windings and any number of phases. A unified two poles model of multi-phase PM motors with non-overlapping stator windings is discussed. Based on this model the analytical harmonic expressions of stator MMF are derived. The harmonic interaction between inductance components is analyzed. The influences of key design parameters are investigated. It shows that optimum combinations of the number of phase, stator slots and rotor poles exist which enable motors to satisfy different practical requirements. Several high power density prototype motors used in electric vehicles is designed. Finite element analyses are used to verify the results.
