  • Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to build up the development pattern of industrial design in China. Based on H. Alpay Er´s six evaluation dimensions of the development pattern of industrial design in Newly Industrialized Countries, this paper put forward the four-phase development pattern of industrial design in China, which included “proto-design phase”, “introduction phase”, “adjustment phase”, and “take-off phase”. It puts forward that industrial design in China is facing the problem of how to transfer from cultural advocacy to institutional improvement and commercial practice. This pattern is useful for summarizing the 30-year development of industrial design in China.
