Abstract :
A common goal of diverse visualization techniques and systems is to aid viewers in fulfilling various purposes in regard to information discovery and interpretation and decision making. The effectiveness of adopting certain visualizations towards fulfilling the purposes may be significantly affected by both the decisional problem context within which the visualization is deployed and the situational context of the viewers. Furthermore, the viewers´ purpose(s) and context may vary over time, which, in turn, may result in changing visualization requirements. In this paper, we propose frameworks and architecture of a purposeful visualization system that is a flexible, interactive and adaptive platform allowing the viewers to design, develop, apply and evaluate purposeful visualizations to deal with the changing context, purposes and visualization requirements. Furthermore, we implement a vertical prototype as a proof of concept and provide a scenario-driven description of the system.
