Abstract :
The principle and motions for the new composite process combined center less grinding with automatic lapping is illustrated in detail, with its system layout being demonstrated. The lapping head, consisting of elastic woolen wheel with slot on and lapping paste/slurry blended with extra-fine grit of abrasive, has two main functions : one is lapping and polishing the workpiece´s cylindrical surface, the other is stabilizing the work piece when being ground by the former center less grinding head. With just once pass, the work piece will be both ground and lapped, realizing combined composite process. From machining operation and test results, conclusion can be drawn as following: 1)the grinding course can be effectively combined with lapping action with just once of work piece installation, 2) machined surface roughness gained can be as low as 0.05 micron with abrasive grit as fine as W0.5, 3) machining procedures concentration leads to time save;4)the setup is compact and easy to handle, 5)automation can be easily realized.
