Abstract
The characteristics and performance of a brushless DC motor used to rotate diskettes (floppy disks) at predetermined, constant rotational speeds have been investigated and analyzed. Such motors are highly integrated, both electronically and mechanically. The difficulties encountered in conducting an empirical study of the open-loop performance of these motors are discussed. The experimental methods used to establish the open-loop, electromechanical model of the motor and to validate the assumption of torque linearity are described. The empirical results are compared to the results predicted by the model, and the effects of a variety of typical diskette loads for the motor are presented
