Abstract
A novel algorithm for adaptive video transmission over wireless fading channels is presented. The algorithm is intended for transmission over channels for which the channel coherence interval is shorter than the duration of a video frame and the transmitter has knowledge of the channel state at the time of transmission of each packet. The probability density function (pdf) of the number of the obtainable bits per symbol, for the coherence intervals where the channel state is not known, and the number of obtainable bits for the first coherence interval are calculated for several values of bit error rate (BER). Based on those parameters modes for video coding and BER are chosen to minimize end-to-end expected distortion. At the time of transmission the parameters at the physical layer are chosen to guarantee bit error probability lower than the chosen BER.
