Abstract
To generate accurate real-time travel speed detection results for freeway traffic monitoring systems using GPS probe data, a Kalman filter based travel speed estimation algorithm is studied. According to the implementation with field GPS data from Los Angeles and the evaluation against speed measured by loop detectors as ground truth, correct rate of the computation speed is about 76%. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm for real-time freeway travel speed estimation.
