Abstract
In this study we performed an analysis of portal hemodynamic after partial shunting using the Wheatstone bridge model of the splanchnic circulation. The model was modified to include a variable resistance for a portacaval shunt and was programmed as a computer simulation. Simulation results demonstrate that if the portacaval pressure gradient is diminished below 1/3 of the initial value after portacaval shunt, the inversion of the portal flow will be made. The portacaval pressure gradient after shunting, in pratice should be maintained at 2/3 of the initial value. These predictions were confirmed by clinical observations in 35 patients undergoing portacaval shunt.
