Abstract :
We propose a new framework for conceptualizing and quantitating the dynamics of health and disease, using neuroautonomic regulation of the heartbeat as a model system. This theory is based on two postulates: 1) Complex physiological systems operate far from equilibrium and demonstrate long-range correlations indicative of a fractal (scale-invariant) mechanism; 2) Pathologic dynamics are marked by a breakdown in this long- range correlation behavior.
