  • Abstract
Adjustment of blood glucose by administration of insulin in type-I diabetics with portable insulin pumps is accomplished by basal infusion and additional bolus injections. The required insulin dosage depends on different factors such as individual insulin sensitivity, food uptake, daily life activity etc. A computer program has been developed that is based on adaptive control algorithms and renders possible the calculation of the adequate insulin dosage. In a first clinical study, this program has been evaluated by 6 well-trained type-I diabetics. The results clearly demonstrate — the acceptance of both the program and the specially developed computer (pocket size) by the patients — the high degree of correlation between the insulin dosages determined by the patients and calculated by the computer.
