Abstract
Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used to observe real time changes in fetal cerebral haemodynamics during labour. We have detected changes in fetal response as labour progresses and with the individual contractions and also in response to different medical events effecting the mother. NIRS allows a unique insight into how the most oxygen sensitive fetal organ copes with labour and the potential to predict cerebral asphyxia.
