Abstract :
In this work, new investigations are performed on the detection of rocks buried in sandy Martian soils with a ground penetrating radar (GPR) system. The aim of the analysis is the evaluation of GPR performance in connection with the planned ExoMars mission. An experimental setup has been realised, consisting of a box, filled with a synthetic silica mixture having electromagnetic properties similar to a dry sandy Martian soil, where basaltic rocks have been buried and detected through a commercial GPR system. Numerical models of the scenarios have also been implemented in order to easily perform suitable parametric analyses involving physical and geometrical characteristics of both the scatterers and the hosting media.
