Abstract :
A new design of a high power voltage amplifier, using a multilevel converter, for testing protection relays is presented in this paper. The multilevel converter consists of two cascaded H bridges with asymmetrical sources. The technique of Nine Levels Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (9LS-PWM) is used to generate a high quality output signal. The high fidelity signal, amplified both in voltage and power, is reconstructed through the use of a π filter. The working principle of the converter is simulated and validated through a set of simulation studies using the PSCAD/EMTDC Simulator. Additionally, an analysis of harmonic distortion content and total harmonic distortion (THD), based on several traditional modulation techniques, are presented.
