Abstract :
The power requirements in industrial distribution networks developed evolutionary towards higher values over the last decade. The referred short circuit current (ISC) values increased steadily. Typical MV switchgear - type-tested according IEC 62 271-200 - might cover an ISC up to 50 kA. Beside the technical performance in terms of short time current and short circuit interruption capability, the personal safety features of switchgears are key for the petrochemical industry. Specific petrochemical requirements like internal arc classification AFLR and the release of hot gases inside the switchgear room is fairly limiting the available solutions. Therefore the application of a fault current limiter is a potential solution for this situation.
