Abstract :
This paper describes the characteristics of different metallic protections of high voltage cables. This protection has three tasks during the cable life and installation; water protection, mechanical protection during laying and operation, draining of short circuit current. The influence of water on the deterioration of XLPE has been studied and described in many papers. However most of these studies were done using only cable cores. The influence of choosing the metallic screens has been neglected. There are a lot of different screens being used in the electrical network and a lot of them are chosen on historical reasons. This paper described the difference of several metallic protection used for high and extra high voltage cables.
