Abstract
A novel type of on-chip laser using multimode interference (MMI) reflectors has been realized through a generic integration approach. They are one of the first photonic integrated devices that were fabricated using an industrial generic integration technology. By using the MMI reflectors to form the laser cavity, the laser light is available on chip, and can be used as a source for other circuit elements. Due to their potential for integration and the relatively simple fabrication technology, the MMI-reflector-based lasers are very promising building blocks for large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
