  • Abstract
    The introduction of large amounts of wind power into the grid increases the short-term variability of the loads as seen by the traditional generator, thus increasing the need for spinning reserve. Wind farm generation and in general non-conventional renewable energy has demonstrated some positive effects as an embedded generation. Also demonstrated are some adverse effects, mainly attributable to the fluctuating real power injection and (in case of fixed-speed induction turbines) to the varying absorption of reactive power. This leads to voltage deviations throughout the network that could affect system stability and power quality for costumer. This paper analyses one solution to this problem. First, variable speed operation is described for wind generators, then the use of flexible alternating-current transmission systems (FACTS) controllers with fixed speed induction generator is considered.
