  • Abstract
In the last decade, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sensors, like TerraSAR-X and Radarsat, have shown their supreme abilities for a wide range of applications. In this decade they have evolved from research like instruments to commercial and security related products. The wide variety of applications, frequencies and technologies drives also the sensor design. In the past, a dedicated design was used in specific projects for specific missions. Today, civil or military customers ask for sensors with reduced cost boundaries and with shorter development cycles. This altogether can only be achieved by a modular design. SmartRadar (Scalable multipurpose aerospace radar technology) is Cassidian Electronics´ response to it.
