  • Abstract
Automatic Under-Frequency Load Shedding (AUFLS) is the last resort for New Zealand (NZ) power system to prevent widespread blackout following severe system contingency. This paper provides a systematic review of existing AUFLS in New Zealand power system and assesses future potentials that can be enabled through emerging Smart Grid technology investments in distribution networks. A new AUFLS scheme is proposed that can be implemented for effective and improved AUFLS. The proposed scheme is analyzed through realistic simulations on a 5 bus network and IEEE-39 bus test system. This is compared with existing New Zealand AUFLS scheme applied to these test systems.
