Abstract :
The Fritz surveys after the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami found the death zone was the areas below 10 meters and less than 1 kilometer from shore and that all areas below 5 meters above sea level and within 3 miles of shore line need to be evacuated. The only current evacuation zone in Hawaii that would be adequate for a M9+ tsunami similar to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is that of Hilo, Hawaii. Hawaii is especially vulnerable to M9+ tsunamis from the Japan Trench, the Marianas Trench and the Tonga Trench in addition to those from the Aleutian and Chile trenches. The current Hawaii evacuation zones leave tens of thousands of Hawaiians at risk from a Tsunami similar to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Other sources of tsunami hazards to Hawaii are landslides and asteroid impacts in the ocean. Tsunami waves of up to 100 or more meters amplitude could be generated by these sources and destroy most of the coastal cities in Hawaii.
