Abstract
As the generated electric power is not enough for the demand of Bangladesh, ocean wave energy can provide a suitable low cost and permanent solution. A promising new technology in this field is a specific wave energy generator which has recently started operation in Europe. The device floats on the ocean water and extracts energy from the waves which causes a relative motion in different parts of the structure. The plant proposed is able to produce 30MW electrical power with an establishment cost of 4 million USD, no fuel cost and very little maintenance cost. Considering the tidal wave height, duration, water depth, cost and durability, Bay of Bengal has good prospect for large scale production of electricity using this type of generator. The present shortage of 1500MW power in Bangladesh can be supplied using the proposed plant utilizing only 50 square kilometre area offshore.
