Abstract
AWE is attempting to define x-ray sources for transmission radiography of thick, high atomic number explosively driven hydrodynamic experiments in a new hydrodynamics research facility (HRF). Figures of merit (FOM) with which to compare radiographic imaging systems are presented. These consider the effects of experimental magnifications, detector characteristics and scattered x-ray backgrounds in addition to the x-ray source intensity, spot size and spectrum. The application of these FOM to long-term (10–15 year) source options for the HRF is also presented and a zone of potential source characteristics is defined as suitable for long term HRF goals.
