Abstract
Explosions of fine wires driven by a 4.5kA peak current peak were studied. The formation of a plasma shell around the wire core was observed. Mass density distributions as a function of time were measured, which provided more quantitative information about wire expansion. Combining these measurements with refractive index measurements from interferometry the phase state of the wire core was determined.
