Abstract
For scientific missions carrying magnetometers with high sensitivity, like BepiColombo, the control and reduction of the magnetic signature of equipment, both AC and DC, is mandatory. For DC characterization, a typical approach is based on unit testing and system level modelling/budgeting. In the initial phases of a project, when unit information from other projects is only partly available and when unit magnetic dipole moments of new equipment are based on best engineering guess, typically a worst case assumption is used, with all magnetic moment vectors directed towards the reference point (i.e. the magnetometer). The worst case approach is the simplest one, but, obviously, this approach produces a pessimistic final value, which typically implies to impose too stringent requirements on the satellite equipments.
