Abstract
Virtual machines are deployed in many cloud computing systems. Thus, exploring virtual machine performance has been an important issue in recent computer systems. Especially, I/O performance is essential because many data intensive applications are running in cloud computing systems. However, it is not easy to understand I/O processes in virtualized environment. This is mainly because two operating systems, a host OS and a guest OS, run in the environment. The both operating systems have memory caches and filesystems, and they behave independently. In this paper, we discuss I/O performance in virtualized environment. First, we propose a method for analyzing I/O processes in virtualized environment. Second, we present I/O performance evaluation and demonstrate allocated memory for virtual machines has large impact on their I/O performance. Finally, we applied our analyzing method to these experiments and showed that the method was effective for investigating virtual machine I/O performance.
