  • Abstract
Generating 3D garment model via 2D patterns has been investigated for years. Many outstanding algorithms have been proposed and adopted by commercialized CAD systems. However, there is no feasible way to generate the 3D garment without providing the 2D patterns for sewing. In this paper, we propose a novel approach in making 3D counterpart of the real garment via the photos taken from the front view and the back view respectively. The original photos are transferred into the so-called `meta-patterns´, and then these meta-patterns are sewn and draped along the shape of the avatar to generate the 3D garment. Various techniques including two-stage numerical integration, dressing-onto-template-layer, cylindrical mapping and sewing-with-transparent-pattern are required for different types of 3D garment prototyping. It is believed that this system is an effective approach in making 3D garment with satisfied visual effects and speed.
