Abstract
An electron source based on glow discharge in an inverse magnetron system has been developed for the heat treatment of materials by large cross-sectional area beams. Millisecond beams with 20 – 200 cm2 cross-section) currents of up to 20 A and particles energies of up to 20 keV have been obtained. The peculiarities of electron extraction through orifices made in the cathode of the discharge system are discussed. It is shown that electron extraction can essentially affect the discharge voltage. It has been established) that varying the value of the magnetic field induction in the discharge system) we can regulate the beam current over a broad range. This source features a straightforward design and electric supply circuit) a long service life and high reliability.
