Abstract :
Large-scale ICF targets can yield much higher energy gains than the standar pellets conceived for reactor scenarios (with less than 4 mg of DT). The main drawback of large-scale targets is the very high energy output (well over 1 OJ). In this paper two new ideas are proposed two get the advantages of large-scale targets without the problem of high microexplosions. The first one is to use an externally guided implosion of the fuel. In this case, the fuel does not occupy all the spherical shell, but a small fraction of the solid angle (about 5% of the 4π stereoradians). The second idea is to use a fuel mixture as Li2DT or CDT as a single pellet material to stabilize the implosion process. Although the energy gain is cut down by the presence of additional atoms, it can be high enough to justify a reactor scenario with these ideas.
