Abstract
This paper describes the role of dedicated semiconductor foundries in today´s integrated circuit (IC) new product development (NPD). Conventionally, the semiconductor foundries provide cost-effective IC manufacturing technology and wafer fabrication services to fabless design companies. However, due to the increasing demands of system-on-chip for internet-centric applications, the fabless companies require complete NPD solutions including design support, technology customization, device models, and packaging. Therefore, the role of today´s foundries has become extremely critical to offer NPD services and end-product solutions for customers. This paper presents the necessary functions and core competencies required for transitioning semiconductor foundries from “pure-play” manufacturing only to complete IC manufacturing solution provider.
