Abstract
Radio based train control system has the effect of increasing a track capacity since it enables the high density train control to be made due to its real-time traceability of train location and the high amount of information transmission, and it has the merit to reduce maintenance costs greatly because it does not use the track circuit. The technical core of automatic train protection (ATP) which is the most vital function in this radio based train control system is to trace the train location on a real-time basis and to secure the safe interval between the preceding train and following tran on the basis of it. This study describes the definition of ATP functions which are being designed in the Korean radio based train control system and the allocation of ATP functions to the onboard and wayside.
