  • Abstract
Plasma compression in the diode of the 2.1010 W high-current electron accelerator "Don" was investigated. Plasma of 2.1015 cm−3 electron density was obtained by the focussing of a neo-dymium glass laser beam onto the surface of an Al-cathode. Formation of dense pinched plasma was observed by means of five-frame exposure, Q-switched, ruby laser interferometry and shadow photography. Plasma temperature and electron plasma density were determined from the multiply-charged Al-ion spectra, which turned out to be 0.2–1.0 keV and 1020 cm−3, respectively. Good symmetry of the pinched plasma could be observed on the basis of X-ray images.
