Abstract
The BLACKJACK 5 pulse generator at Maxwell Laboratories, Inc., has been used to create dense, high temperature plasmas by imploding cylindrical arrays of fine wires and annular gas columns. The imploded plasmas have been diagnosed using X-ray and optical techniques under a wide variety of conditions. Low mass wires are found to be effective for producing multi keV temperature plasmas. The emission spectrum above 1 keV is strongly dependent on wire material. The results of experiments with low mass wire arrays will be discussed.
