Abstract :
This work presents theroretical calculations describing the application of an electron beam of 50 MeV energy and several kA current to a free electron laser (FEL) experiment at 10.6 um signal wavelength. The device is a single pass, high gain amplifier utilizing a planar wiggler with field strength Bw decreasing with distance down the device. We discuss the critical role of beam emittance in determining the required input laser energy and gain of the amplifier.
