Abstract
High brightness, high efficiency light ion diode are required for inertial confinement fusion. The experimental and computational performance of a diverged electron beam ion diode (inverse pinch ion diode) is presented. In inverse pinch ion diode, electrons flow outward from a cathode due to the E × B drift. There is no electron pinch region where the ion beam divergence is large. The diode brightness of 1.4 TW/cm2 rad2 and ion efficiency of 20 were obtained with a simple inverse pinch ion diode. By adding the self radial magnetic field in diode, the ion efficiency was drastically improved up to 80 % and diode brightness up to 4.3 TW/cm2rad2.
