Abstract
With maritime activity increasing in the Arctic, the US Coast Guard is preparing for an expanded role. Operating safely and effectively in harsh, remote Polar Regions with ice hazards, poor communications and satellite coverage poses a tremendous challenge;, the USCG plans to take advantage of relevant technology, strengthen existing partnerships and explore new ones with International and Federal agencies, state, local, and tribal governments, academia, and nongovernmental organizations. Currently the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) provides important information for conducting all missions related to maritime safety, security, and stewardship. Improvements to IOOS that would benefit USCG include real-time access to observations, filling gaps in the National HF Ocean Radar Network, and increasing coverage of synthetic aperture radar.
