Abstract
An experimental method using dummy masses is used to determine the fly height characteristics of HDD thrust bearings under different loading conditions. Numerical simulation results indicate that the behavior of the predicted fly height matches closely with experimental data. The frequency response of the FDB bearing - dummy mass system is measured while excited by an impact hammer. The (0,1) rocking modes of the system becomes obvious and easily measurable with the addition of the proof masses.
