Abstract :
The fabric was incorporated with deodorize substances i.e. activated carbons by printed and coated techniques. The aim is to produce fabric which functions as anti odour. Human body produces different odour properties and the anti-odour is to take away the unpleasant odour from the wearer and make them feel comfortable. The normal anti-odour is from silver, zeolites etc which are expensive. The anti odour used here is activated carbon from local coconut and oil palm shells incorporated in pigment printing and coating paste using different percentages of 5%, 10% and 15%. Printing and coating were carried out on polyester and cotton fabrics. The effectiveness of anti-odour properties of treated fabrics was evaluated by human olfactory; a set of panels and machine olfactory; electronic nose. The odour analysis by panels was performed according to ISO 8589 standard, while the odour analysis by machine was conducted by Portable Electronic Nose (PEN 3). The results showed that, fabrics containing activated carbon are able to reduce odour that was picked up by the fabrics. The higher concentration of activated carbons on the fabrics generated lower rating of odour intensity and odour annoyance of onion on the fabrics.
