Abstract
Next-Generation PONs will likely contain one or more of: Optical amplification, WDM, Advanced modulation techniques. Physical layer will grow in importance. N-G PON variants will require wide array of active components: WDM-PON: RSOAs/REAMs, Tunable Lasers and Filters, Comb Seed Lasers. Long-Rance: SOAs, Raman Pumps. Electronic processing (DSP) will grow in importance to support advanced modulation formats.
