Abstract
Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) provide an attractive solution to the challenges of complexity, size and power dissipation in next-generation access systems. This paper reviews the requirements for next-generation systems based on wavelength division multiplexing in passive optical networks (WDM-PON) and assesses steps towards PIC implementation.
