  • Abstract
Distribution companies are facing the realities of distributed generation (DG) and the transformation of the traditional passive distribution networks into active networks with bi-directional power flows that call for enhanced distributed control in order to preserve the supply quality standards. The appearance of various intermittent Renewable Energy Sources (RES) directly connected to the distribution networks further complicates their operation requiring enhanced automation based on real time system data. Smart meters that will fulfil open protocol standards for interoperability can form the basis for a real time gateway to customers in line with the system automation requirements. Technologies need to be tried out on real systems and extensive pilot projects can offer valuable knowledge for effective roll out policies. One such AMI project is in progress on the Distribution Network of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus covering 3000 smart meters to be installed on the premises of all categories of customers within well selected rural and urban areas. The progress made shall be presented together with the identified strategy and policy for successful completion of the project.
