Abstract
This work employs a combinatorial optimization method in selecting the appropriate pair of off-the-shelf generator and gearbox within a rapid evaluation framework for tidal in-stream energy (TISE) systems that allows users to easily vary block/module characteristics. The suitable combination of discretely-paired blocks exhibit desirable performance in accord with the following criteria: high energy, at reasonable cost ($/kWh is low), with manageable weight (less complex deployment). The study makes use of a fixed-pitch vertical axis turbine with known characteristics to be installed at a specific site where predicted resource data is available. The performance of various combinations are presented and compared. The top 3 combinations yielding highest energy output are put forward and are further investigated in terms of cost and weight to ultimately decide the best performing / most suitable configuration given the site´s resource, and device characteristics.
