Abstract :
Mobility Management is one of the major functions of a mobile wireless network in order to allow mobile terminals (MTs) to stay connected to the network so that calls and other services can reach them. This work presents a novel framework for mobility management in hierarchical cellular networks (HCNs), where MTs receive signal from both micro- and macro-cell tiers. The framework uniquely combines two existing techniques - one for location update and another for paging - after incorporating necessary enhancements in each of them in order to gelling them seamlessly within the proposed structure. Importantly, the proposed mobility management techniques dynamically adjust themselves to handle location update and paging strategy effectively. The paper delineates how the techniques have evolved from a simple version (previously proposed for HCNs) to a better version with added complexity. We have done extensive analytical performance analyses to indicate that this new technique considerably outperforms the basic techniques in terms of both signaling cost and delay.
