Abstract :
In this paper a flexible, conformal, U-shaped loop antenna is proposed for biomedical telemetry in the MedRadio band (401-406 MHz). Due to its flexibility, this antenna can be attached to the outer wall of a small cylindrical implant of 5 mm in radius and 15 mm in length. When simulated inside homogeneous and multilayer body models, this antenna shows a wide-bandwidth of 207 MHz for VSWR <; 2 (from 348 to 555 MHz) covering the entire MedRadio and the industrial scientific medical (ISM) 433-434 MHz Bands. The simulated maximum gain of this antenna in each model can satisfy a link budget of logical parameters for data transmission from inside the human body to an external receiver at a distance of 2 m. This seems to be the only reported flexible antenna that can be used with implants for such a distance in the MedRadio band. In addition to the attractive features of having a small size and broad bandwidth, this design also offers the possibility to work at other frequencies.
